Full PA and excellent monitor system (Bose L1) provided - also, up to 5 microphones; an acoustic and electric guitar; guitar amp; cables; some effect pedals; music stand with light, etc.

You are always best to bring your own instrument - full bands should bring their own additional amps and drum kit. (Small amps and small drum kits are highly advised...for set-up/break-down ease, and for a better sound level.)


Any style, any combination, (solo, duo, full band) and any instrument. This is the only Open Mic in the area that can actually lead to paying weekend gigs.

As far as contemporary I can perform the melodic styles of singing like modern r&b and soft rock.

I'm working on a deeper and more throat heavy style like that of most heavy metal singers so I can bring it loud when asked.

The 3 acts above have performed at least once on a Monday Open Mic at O'Leary's, and this is the only mandatory criteria to be part of future Home Grown WEEKEND paying gigs. Please do not drop off demo CD's at O'Leary's. Just come down on a Monday and play.

This is exposure, on the weekend, on the Beach, with pay. Don't think you ain't ready or ain't good enough yet. Believe that you are. That's the first step; I'm just trying to give you the second step.

You can e-mail me any links to your MySpace and/or band website, or attach some demo material in any format - just for the purpose of knowing for sure if Paddy O'Leary's is the right venue for your act. I won't ever have you waste your time, and will let you know if you and your act should pursue this particular step-ladder.

Even if you can't get your full band together for a Monday, (I know it can be tough) come down with at least the primary vocalist and anyone else in the band, and do whatever material you can. We can and will back you. That will be enough to put you on the Home Grown list.

Playing out in clubs is an option; right now, I'm light on equipment, and will show up for the jam or gig with a 5-string, effects and high-quality combo amp. The amp has a DI, so I could hook into any PA system.

We can do some covers to get musically acquainted. I'm not looking to start a band where we do a bunch of yellin' and hollerin' over some power chords (no offense to those wild types). If I wanted screamo personnel I'd have gone already to the special education classes around town.

I play lead guitar and need a competent: drummer, 2nd guitar, bassist (Entwistle, please?), and of course, a baritone. Already I've learned that the baritone will be the key to the band. We will need a lot of alcohol. Which is good, since I live only a couple blocks from THE Handlebar. (not any other you were thinking of, just THE Handlebar). Skip the alcohol for the time being (30 seconds, right), so we'll get on with the shambolic melodies as soon as we piece together a few specific individuals.

Once again, if you're inclined to the TK101 doctrine, don't let me know, and don't worry about anything. Scream your hearts out and be ready for Armageddon because God may need a screamer to alert the masses. For now, I'm a drunken lout and I'm out. Peace be with thee, my brethren.

Band of Bothers (Bob)plays every Friday 6-10 on the back deck of highway 98, also known as Kooter Browns. The out door amosphere is ideal for smokers and non smokers. Kids are often seen in the crowd as it is also a restaurant. But it is a great venue that supports all styles of music. The crowd is great-military presence. People are DRINKING and having a good time. In side the karee okie (as much as I despise it) kicks butt and they get a pretty spiffy crowd-inside.

At 6:00pm we play, no stage, plenty of room. I set my drums up just outside the cabbana roof which reduces the loudness, we continue to adjust our systems for better musical blend. You could play anything here except for heavy hip-hop/rap or Metal. The croud is a blend of young and old-pro military!

I listened to these folks play for a set. I think they did a great job, and I do not listen to most country music.

The Reef is located not far from the beach and consists of a restaurant, an inside smoking bar and a fairly large outdoor patio area, where the musicians had set up. The waitresses seemed very friendly and the rest of the folks listening to the artists were laid back. I did not get a chance to ask if there were any issues associated with setting up or performing there at the venue, but they seemed happy. The acoustics seemed fine to me. The patio there is probably best suited to acoustic work by small groups and individuals.

Altogether, I like the place, but I’m unaware of any possible logistical issues.

Disclaimer: Band of Brothers plays at this location for free beverages and food, for the entertainment of everyone, from friends to folks who drop by to hear live music.

The Band of Brothers (Rick – drums, Amanda – vocals, Olin – bass, Eric – lead guitar, Mark – lead guitar, George – rhythm guitar) played at Kooter Browns West on Hwy 98 on Friday, 12 Sep. We had a really good time, playing from 6pm to 10pm (We play on the patio, so we are restricted by noise ordinances). Audience was about 30 folks and KB did a bang up job helping us get organized and making sure we had the power to run the PA, amps and other essentials. We made it through about 2/3’s or more of our set lists and the audience seemed pretty responsive. Larissa, the outside waitress did a good job handling the crowd as was always around to get us a refill or take an order for food. The setup allowed us plenty of room to spread out a little bit. Because of the open air, musicians are recommended to add a little reverb to the mixer to give it a room feel.

Hope this helps potential acts get an idea of what its like to play there. We should be back next Friday, 19 Sep.
